Rise Above Fear
Fear helped our ancestors survive by alerting them of clear and present danger like a predator or natural disaster. Thankfully we live in the modern world. Today our fears tend to be more emotional, what do others think of me or will this new job work out? Unless there’s a lion chasing you most likely your fears are an illusion, a scenario your mind created that doesn’t actually exist. We perceive these fears as a threat when in reality we’re letting fear keep us from trying something new in the first place.
“Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.”
— Rudyard Kipling
Overthinking a future failure or worst-case scenario does not make it real. We can not see the future so imagining and focusing on what could happen is a waste of time and energy. We all admire adrenaline junkies who seek out fear for fun, you may be asking what’s their secret? It’s not that they don’t have fears at all, they’ve learned to harness that fear and control it. You don’t have to jump out of an airplane to practice managing fear (or you could). That heart pumping, sweaty palm, butterfly in your stomach feeling doesn’t have to be bad. Use that adrenaline to propel you forward into taking a chance!
“Find out what you’re afraid of and go live there.”
— Chuck Palahniuk
Find a strategy for dealing with fear that works for you, I face fear by jumping right in. I always volunteer to go first. Early in my life I became aware that the more I thought about it the more time my mind has to make that fear into a bigger monster than it actually is. I will never allow fear to stop me from saying yes to new opportunities. Live a life that is full of adventure and fantastic stories, you will never get that chance if you let fear take over.
- Stand up to your fears, face it head on. The longer you avoid facing it the more time your mind has to imagine something much worse than the actual threat.
- Break it down. How could you overcome your fear one step at a time?
- Accept it, like it or not fear happens to us all. You will face things that make your heart skip a beat. Work through what you’re feeling and know that all of us experience fear and get past it.
- It feels great to accomplish something new, rise above your fears and don’t let them hold you back from pursuing your dream. Redirect your energy into overcoming fear instead of being paralyzed by the “what if?”
“Fear has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything And Run’ or ‘Face Everything And Rise.’
The choice is yours.”— Zig Ziglar
